There is a piece of genius software out there which I dreamed of as a teenager. This software is finally here, becoming increasingly more detailed. It is Google Earth. This spectacular view of the earth allows you to fly wherever you want to without having to leave your computer desk and without the flight costs and the security clearances and the hassle of having to wait for 2 hours prior to check in at airports. This will take you where you want to go to within 10m of an area in spectacular detail.
As a child I was always interested in maps and geography and could tell an area simply by looking at it on a detailed map. Like the OS maps. I wished (and maybe even prayed) that there would one day be OS maps for the whole earth, so I could see what the land is like in russia, Kamchatka, Japan, Canada, Africa etc, without needing to go there. I would collect them all.
Even now, maps excite me so this new tool is actually phenomenal as it takes the map and actually gives a picture of the ground itself and you can fly across seas and mountain ranges, imagining you being on a boat or in an aeroplane or in a rocket zooming off into space until the earth is a tiny ball on the screen.
You can look at exotic places that mariners only dreamed about only a few decades ago, such as easter island or the Kerguelans or follow Lewis and Smith as they explored the wild west of the american frontier, or even closer to home, the route of the offa's dyke or hadrians wall or even good old Bedworth!
Well done Google Earth.
